Modern Encaustic / Rust & Copper Paintings
Encaustic & Precious Metals
These works were created during the same period of my practice, exploring the transformative qualities of materials, texture, layering, and time. Some works combine encaustic with oxidized metals, while others explore each medium independently.
ENCAUSTIC SERIES
Encaustic painting is one of the world’s oldest painting techniques, dating back thousands of years. I am drawn to the medium for its luminous color, rich surface, and ability to create layers of depth and texture.
My encaustic paintings are created through a process of applying, layering, and fusing encaustic paint with heat. Each layer becomes part of the surface, creating subtle variations in colour, translucency, texture, and depth.
I use R&F Encaustic Paints, professional-grade encaustic paints made with purified beeswax, damar resin, and artist pigments. The natural qualities of the wax and pigment, combined with the process of heating and fusing each layer, allow the surface to evolve in ways that cannot be precisely replicated.
I am particularly interested in the way encaustic can conceal and reveal what lies beneath. Layers may appear, disappear, or become partially obscured as the painting develops, creating a sense of depth and discovery. Each painting is truly one of a kind.
Materials & Craftsmanship
I use professional, archival-quality materials because I believe original artwork should be created to endure for generations.
Each painting is created on a premium archival wood cradle panel selected for its strength, durability, and long-term stability. The combination of a substantial archival support and professional artist-grade encaustic materials creates a work intended to be enjoyed for generations.
Precious Metals Series
This series grew from my fascination with the beauty found in weathered surfaces and the way nature transforms ordinary materials over time.
Inspired by childhood memories of harsh winters, I was captivated by the way metals rusted, paint peeled, and hidden layers slowly emerged, revealing unexpected colours, textures, and beauty shaped by time and the elements.
Through this series, I explore the quiet relationship between nature, time, and transformation. Rather than concealing the marks of time, I embrace them, allowing deterioration, oxidation, layering, and change to become part of the artwork.
My hope is to invite viewers to slow down and look closely, to become immersed in the rich textures, layered surfaces, and unexpected colors, and perhaps discover something new each time they return to a painting.
Materials & Process
These works are created using professional artist-grade metal paints and mediums containing genuine iron, bronze, copper, and other metal particles. The metals are carefully oxidized through a controlled process to create authentic rust and naturally aged patinas.
The process is both controlled and unpredictable. As the metals react and transform, they produce individual variations in colour, texture, and surface character that cannot be exactly duplicated. Every painting is truly one of a kind.
